The history of Turin and Piedmont in one place
It originated as a Roman gateway to the city. Towers and foundations of this ancient structure are still visible at the start of the tour!
During the Middle Ages, it was transformed into a fortress: a stronghold designed to house courtiers and the lord of the city.
Between the 17th and 18th centuries, it passed into the hands of the two Madame Royals, after whom it was named. The two Savoy duchesses moved their residence here and planned the change from a castle to a noble palace.
In the 19th century, it became the historic seat of the first parliament of the Kingdom of Sardinia and then of the Kingdom of Italy!
Today it houses the Civic Museum of Ancient Art: it has exhibits from all eras, from all over Piedmont.
